General Adult Psychiatrist, Bow Valley, AB

Canmore and the Bow Valley needs a part-time or full-time adult psychiatrist. Although our local GPs are experienced, locally accessible expertise for consultation and ongoing outpatient care is needed.  Availability for inpatient consultation would be an asset but not required.  Our beautiful clinic space is centrally located beside the hospital, the clinic is a collaborative team, and our medical community is very supportive.  Flexible hours available but because of a large referral base, filling your schedule will be easy.  Come to a dream location that can offer work-life balance. Bow River Region of Alberta includes communities of Banff, Canmore, Mini Thni, and Lake Louise, with a population of approximately 30,000.

With fully equipped hospitals and ERs in both Canmore and Banff, and the highest number of family physicians per capita in Alberta, access to quality health care in the Bow Valley is prompt and convenient. Addiction and Mental Health services are located in Canmore, Banff, Lake Louise and within the nearby Stoney Nakoda First Nation and offer a full continuum of outpatient and outreach care, encompassing all ages and stages of life. The area also boasts the Bow Valley Primary Care Network which provides innovative health promotion and programming across the lifespan and fosters key linkages and partnerships with local physicians’ groups, health care programs and community partners.

Ideally, the successful psychiatrist will have privileges with Canmore General Hospital including providing services to the ER, Urgent Mental Health Care Centre and Consultation Liaison for inpatients at the General Hospital. The psychiatrist will primarily be stationed at Canmore, with privileges at the Regional Mental Health Clinics at Canmore and Banff, accepting referrals from Family Doctors from the entire Bow River region. The Bow Valley has a well-resourced Primary Care Network with a strong desire to engage a Psychiatrist who is community oriented and interested in building long-term working relationships with local providers and with patients and their support systems.  There are also Child & Adolescent and Geriatric psychiatry services available at Bow Valley, with much of the geriatric service provided via telehealth through the General Hospital.

The successful psychiatrist will work within multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary care settings that provide day to day patient care. The psychiatrist will be expected to:

  • diagnose and manage individuals with moderate to severe mental health conditions, emotional and behavioral disorders, addictions, pain and trauma. 

  • perform comprehensive biopsychosocial formulations, diagnostic impressions and safety assessments.

  • synthesize and supervise biopsychosocial treatment and care plans.

  • issue and supervise Community Treatment Orders (CTOs)

  • take part in, and support local CME events on mental health

  • be part of a community partnership (e.g. between AHS Addiction and Mental Health, Primary Care Physicians and Inter-Professional Team members, the Psychiatrist, other mental health providers in Bow Valley communities), and to help raise awareness of supports available to providers and patients while engaging providers to build competence and confidence.

Expectation is one FTE or part thereof. Familiarity with the use of Electronic Medical Records is an asset as most clinical record keeping will be on an electronic platform. A sense of fulfillment at providing a truly meaningful and appreciated service can be expected by the successful applicant.

The communities of Canmore, Banff and Lake Louise have many social and community opportunities for individuals and families with an abundance of restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, sports fields, and recreation centres. There are also many social clubs, sports leagues and organizations where locals young and old can get involved in their community. The Bow Valley is also a wonderful place to raise a family and offers excellent educational options, including Canadian Rockies Public Schools (with French Emersion option), Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Academy, and École Notre-Dame des Monts K-12 Francophone School.
